Welcome to the Project GWR Development Series.

GWR (GW-Ransomware) is a simulation tool that emulates ransomware behavior in a controlled and measurable way. The project is aligned with MITRE ATT&CK TTPs, allowing Red Team operators and defenders to test how their environments respond to realistic ransomware activity without the risks of deploying live malware.

The purpose of GWR is to provide a safe but accurate way to evaluate and harden detection and response tooling. By simulating common attacker techniques, it enables teams to validate whether alerts fire as expected, identify visibility gaps, and strengthen their ability to respond to ransomware threats. GWR bridges the gap between theory and practice, giving defenders a repeatable and controlled method to test resilience against one of the most prevalent attack types.
